Welsh Assembly Member - Jonathan Morgan AM

Shadow Minister for Health and Social Services in the National Assembly for Wales

Jonathan's Experience

Since 1999, Jonathan has had responsibility for the assembly's two most important portfolios - education and health. After serving as education spokesman during the first assembly term - where he highlighted the funding shortfalls affecting schools in parts of Cardiff - Jonathan was handed the health brief in 2003 which he has used to expose the Labour assembly government's disastrous handling of the Welsh NHS. He is now the Shadow Minister for Health and Social Services in the Assembly.

Jonathan has also been an active local campaigner in Cardiff North, working with Conservative councillors in the capital on behalf of constituents. At the assembly elections in May 2003 Jonathan slashed Labour's majority in Cardiff North to just 540.

In 1997 Jonathan stood for Parliament in Merthyr Tydfil and was the Conservative Party's candidate for Cardiff North at the 2005 General Election.

After serving for eight years as AM for South Wales Central, Jonathan was elected as Assembly Member for Cardiff North in May 2007.

In 2006 Jonathan was named Assembly Member of the Year in the ITV Wales/Wales Yearbook political awards. Judges said praised his work as health spokesman as "substantive, well thought-out and overwhelmingly constructive".

About Jonathan

Jonathan boasts ability beyond his years. One of the National Assembly's youngest members, he is one of the institution's most effective performers and has held the Labour government to account on issues as diverse as hospital waiting lists, council tax rises and student hardship.

Born in Cardiff in 1974, Jonathan hails from a family steeped in local politics. His grandfather Winston Griffiths recently stood down after many years as a councillor in Cardiff, while his mother and uncle have just been elected to serve on the same local authority.

Jonathan is a graduate of the University of Wales, Cardiff, where he gained a degree in Law and a Masters degree in European Policy. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and lists Europe, education, health and local government among his interests. Before election to the assembly, Jonathan was European officer for Coleg Glan Hafren in Cardiff.
